It really grinds my gears when I see videos or hear coaches speak about the prowler. All this talk about it being an amazing conditioning tool due to its small learning curve and safety irritates me. I get even madder when I see videos of coaches using it in their training — especially with hardcore music in the background.
I know what you’re thinking.
wahhhhhh? This guy doesn’t like the prowler? But but, evvvverybody love the prowler.
First off — calm down. Have some cocoa and protein powder spaz. I love the prowler. I think it’s an amazing tool. If I could I would marry the prowler and make a wicked awesome montage video dancing off into the sunset with it.
So why I am so jaded towards them?
My gym doesn’t have one
How many commercial gyms do you know that have prowlers or sleds? How many commercial gyms have enough space for a prowler even if you were to buy one?
This isn’t a rant against those lucky enough to have prowlers (I said no rants remember). Instead, I’ve figured out a way that you can use equipment found in any gym to mimic the movement. Better yet, this variation actually gives you a lot more play. You can use it for strength, conditioning, grip, shoulder stability and core work.
Instead of writing it out step by step I went out and bought a snazzy new camera and started a YouTube channel for you guys. Check out the video below, comment on it, like it and share it. Lastly, don’t forget to follow my YouTube channel as I’ve got some fun stuff planned for it.
So the next time you get upset because your gym is missing the new cool piece of equipment think outside the box. Improvise. I bet you can replace it.
If you haven’t already. Please add me to Facebook and/or follow me on Twitter.
Can you figure out any other cool tricks I can do with my new “prowler”? Comment below and, as always, please share.

Awesome job Jon!
Told you I’d figure out a way to use them on a sled, it just took a little playing around. We’re still perfecting it.
Great post Jon.
If you come to St. John’s you can use our prowler as much as you want ok )>
All the best man.

Tempting…
Well done son! You can also use a wheelbarrow and fill it up with big rocks.
I live in Canada. Our big rocks are snow
Hi there. First time commenter here. Very interesting variation! I’ve never actually used a prowler because they don’t have one at my gym. Sadly, I’ve also never seen a glute-ham raise machine at any gym, ever. I’m going to figure out a way to incorporate this into a cardio routine. I enjoy the strange looks I get from people when I do unusual stuff like that. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for commenting and welcome to the site. If you’re not getting funny looks at the gym you’re doing something wrong!
I’ve thrown some rubber coated weight plates onto my gym towel and pushed them across the length of the (smooth laminate wood) floor of a gyms studio before. I push forward as fast as possible, and then grab into one of the handles and bear crawl & drag with one arm backwards. It’s worked nicely for me. Towel must be dry. Floor must be smooth.
Wicked. That works really well too. At our club the flooring is recycled tire. It makes for pretty nasty friction so that doesn’t work. Great idea though
